How Dental Practices Get Found, Chosen and Booked: A Local SEO and Follow-Up Playbook
A practical playbook for dental practices: show up in local and AI search, earn patient trust, and respond and follow up fast enough to turn enquiries into booked appointments.

A patient with a broken tooth or a long-delayed implant consultation doesn't browse your website for an hour. They search "dentist near me" or "dental implants" plus their city, look at the first few results, and contact whoever seems most trustworthy and most responsive. Often they contact two or three practices and book with the first one that answers.
That means growing a dental practice is not one problem but three: being found when the search happens, being chosen over the practice next to you, and being booked before the patient moves on. Most practices work hard on the first and leave the other two to chance.
This is a practical playbook for all three.
Get Found: Show Up When Patients Search
1. Treat your Google Business Profile as your real front door
For most local searches, your Google Business Profile appears before your website does. Make sure it has the correct name, address and phone number, accurate opening hours (including emergency availability, if you offer it), the right categories, current photos of your practice and team, and a link to your booking page. Keep the details identical everywhere your practice is listed.
2. Build one page per treatment, not one page for everything
Patients search for specific treatments: implants, clear aligners, teeth whitening, emergency dental care, children's dentistry. A single "Services" page cannot rank for all of them or answer each patient's questions. Give each major treatment its own page that explains who it's for, what the process looks like, how long it takes, and what to do next.
3. Be local on purpose
Mention the neighbourhoods and towns you serve, in natural language, on the pages that matter. Local search rewards practices that are clearly tied to a place, and patients are reassured when they can see that you know their area.
4. Plan for AI answers, not only Google rankings
More patients now ask tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews questions such as "Which dentist near me does Invisalign?" These tools tend to favour practices whose websites explain things clearly and consistently. Write plain, specific answers to the questions patients actually ask, keep your practice details consistent across the web, and make your treatment pages easy for both people and machines to read. This is the idea behind AEO and GEO, and it complements traditional SEO rather than replacing it.
Get Chosen: Give Patients a Reason to Pick You
Showing up in search gets you considered. What gets you chosen is trust, and patients look for it in a handful of places.
- Reviews. Both the number and the recency matter, and so does how you respond. A short, courteous reply to every review, positive or negative, shows how the practice treats people.
- Proof of results. Where treatment and patient consent allow, before-and-after examples and short explanations of what was done help anxious patients picture the outcome.
- Clear practical information. Which insurance plans you work with, whether you offer payment plans, what a first visit involves and what it typically costs. Patients who cannot find this information tend to move on to a practice that publishes it.
- A fast, simple mobile site. Most dental searches happen on a phone. If the booking button is hard to find or the page loads slowly, the patient will not wait.
- The people. Photos and short introductions of the dentists and team. Fear of the dentist is common, and a friendly face lowers it.
Get Booked: Close the Gap Between Interest and Appointment
This is where many practices lose the most patients without noticing. Someone fills in a form at 9 p.m. or calls during a busy clinic session. If nobody responds quickly, they book somewhere else, and you never find out they were interested.
Reply in minutes, not hours
An automatic text and email confirming the enquiry, followed by a prompt human reply, makes a big difference. Speed signals that the practice is organised and cares. The goal is for every enquiry to receive an immediate acknowledgement, whatever time it arrives.
Follow up with the patients who don't book straight away
Many patients ask a question, say they will think about it, and then simply forget. A short, friendly follow-up sequence over the next couple of weeks, by text and email, brings a share of them back. Each message should be helpful rather than pushy: answer a common concern, offer a convenient time, or share a patient story.
Bring lapsed patients back
Your existing patient list is one of your most valuable assets. Patients who are overdue for a check-up or hygiene visit, or who started a treatment plan and never finished, can be invited back with a simple, well-timed message. This usually costs far less than winning a new patient from scratch.
Know where bookings come from
If you cannot tell which channel produced a booked appointment, you cannot tell what is working. Tracking enquiries from first touch to booked visit lets you spend more on what brings real patients and stop spending on what doesn't.
What to Do This Month
- Check your Google Business Profile for accuracy and add fresh photos.
- List your top three treatments and make sure each has its own dedicated page.
- Put your insurance and payment information somewhere patients can find it in one click.
- Send yourself a test enquiry outside office hours and see how long it takes to get a response.
- Write a three-message follow-up sequence for patients who enquire but don't book.
- Pick one list of lapsed patients to invite back this quarter.
A Real Example
